From 29 August 2023 London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) expanded to the Borough’s southern boundary with Enfield.
Any non-ULEZ-compliant vehicle is now subject to a daily charge of £12.50 to travel within the border of London.
Broxbourne Council strongly opposes the expansion and wrote to the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, in May urging him to reconsider. This expansion is resulting in a significant and detrimental effect on residents of the Borough, many of whom need to travel into London for work and leisure and to access essential medical services.
On Tuesday 11th April 2023, the full council of Broxbourne Council considered a motion relating to the plan to expand the Ultra-Low Emission Zone from inside the north and south circular roads in London right up to the borders of our county. Councillors voted unanimously not to support the scheme.
Lewis Cocking, Leader of Broxbourne Council said:
By expanding the ULEZ the Mayor of London has targeted the least well-off residents of the Borough who are less likely to be able to afford to replace their vehicle. This is amidst a cost of living crisis resulting in significant detrimental effects for those on the lowest incomes. The strong negative public reaction to the expansion of ULEZ has been ignored. I strongly urge the Mayor of London to stop the Ultra Low Emission Zone expansion due to its significant impact on the Borough and its residents and other local authorities with boundaries adjoining London.
Hertfordshire County Council, along with other Home Counties, has refused to allow signage related to the ULEZ scheme to be installed on Highways within Hertfordshire. Broxbourne Council fully supports this position.
