The Government’s English Devolution White Paper is a political attack on local democracy.
Labour are imposing this expensive reorganisation against the wishes of existing councils, and making it harder for residents to have a say on critical decisions in their area, such as where new housing is built.
Currently, district councils such as Broxbourne and East Herts are able to operate closely to the people they serve - but these plans would abolish them.
Creating a ‘super-council’, covering at least half a million people, will do nothing to improve accountability or the delivery of services.
I strongly oppose this proposal.
In the House of Commons, I asked the Minister to clarify just how large the new unitary authority covering our area will be. I will continue to fight any proposal that will harm Broxbourne.
